Last week in London, FERN was awarded at the 2 Degrees Sustainability Champions Awards, a gathering of nearly 300 sustainability professionals from the UK and around the globe.
2Degrees is an international online business community where 32,000+ members can find essential resources and information to help improve efficiency and operating procedures, on the path towards sustainability. 2013 is the year of the inaugural 2Degrees Sustainability Champions Awards, where members were given the chance to present their innovative programming and vote for their peers.
With 13 categories and many entries in each category, the 2Degrees member community had their work cut out for them, in reading and voting for their choices! The Waste & Resource Management award was presented by Waste Watch. FERN took home the plaque, and the runners up were CocaCola Enterprises and Alra Foods.
FERN co-founders Naji Boustany and Meredith Danberg-Ficarelli are elated to have been awarded the first prize. They greatly appreciate this recognition of the work they have been doing in Beirut, Lebanon, especially to raise awareness about wastefulness and to present existing opportunities for recycling and composting. Through operating FERN, they have found a growing network of informal and formal solutions for environmentally friendly waste treatment in the Beirut area, and believe that the essential next step is the fostering of connections for logistical development to carry out well-planned programs.
FERN is grateful to their collaborators and partners that helped them to launch operations on such a short timeline, and is looking optimistically at the future of waste and resource management in Lebanon, and across the globe.
